[1]  January 2007 Luncheon

Editor's Note - We apologize for the frequent e-mails, as our ListServ sent a duplicate message recently and our e-News was later than anticipated this month.  -JR

The Alaska Section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. will hold its monthly luncheon 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM, Wednesday, January 17th , at the Sourdough Mining Co. Restaurant, 5200 Juneau Street.

The Alaska Robotics Education Association (AREA) is our featured presentation this month.  There is talk of starting an IEEE sponsored AREA team with local students for the First Robotics Challenge. We also will be involved in the 2010 International Conference on Robotics and Automation here in Anchorage.

Dave Patterson founded the Alaska Robotics Education Association in 2001 and has served as the president since its inception. AREA was formed for the purpose of supporting robotics based programs to get kids interested and excited in math, science, and technology. Dave is a 40 year resident of Alaska, and graduated from West Point with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. The inspiration for AREA came from his experience as a mentor and resource coordinator involved with the first high school team in the state to participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition in 2000. Seeing the impact this experience had on the kids was the catalyst to provide this opportunity to more kids throughout the state.

The meeting is free and open to the public. The cost for a buffet style lunch is $15 per person for IEEE members or $17 for nonmembers. Please RSVP by Tuesday, January 16th to Harry Turtschanow, 729-4057 or e-mail hturtsch "ąt" anthc.org.

[4]  Anchorage E-Week Needs Volunteers

in Local Schools

The Anchorage National Engineers Week Steering Committee is reaching out to members of all professional engineering societies in the local area to come forward and offer their time to meet with Anchorage School District classes to discuss their profession. This is a very rewarding activity, both to the students as well as the engineers. Nicole Knox, the Anchorage E-Week School Speakers Coordinator, can arrange for you to meet with an elementary, middle, or high school class that works with your schedule. Typical presentations are 45 minutes to 1 hour, and Ms. Knox does have presentation aids available.

To schedule an engagement, or obtain more information, please contact Nicole Knox directly at 646-9647, or email nknox "ąt" rmconsult.com.  Please identify yourself as an IEEE Alaska Section member, interested in discussing aspects of the electrical engineering profession.

Dee S. Fultz, P.E. - Government Activities Chair
