[1]  February 2007 Luncheon

The Alaska Section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. will hold its monthly luncheon 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM, Wednesday, February 21st , at the Sourdough Mining Co. Restaurant, 5200 Juneau Street.

Our February Luncheon Meeting is to include a presentation on DC Power System Design for Telecommunications, based on the book written by Whit Reeve, available from Wiley Publishing. The text explains how to design direct current (dc) power systems that operate at nominal voltages of 24 and 48 volts dc, use lead-acid batteries, and are installed in public network telecommunications systems and other exclusive-use environments. Rather than train readers to design systems by rote, the author gives readers the skills and knowledge to perform systematic analyses to make the best choices based on several economic, operational, electrical, and physical considerations.

Whitham D. Reeve is the President of Reeve Engineers and the author of numerous books and articles on telecommunications engineering. Mr. Reeve is the Editor of the IEEE Press Telecommunications Handbook Series, past member of the IEEE Press Editorial Board, a Senior Member of the IEEE, and a Senior and Charter Member of the National Association of Radio and Telecommunications Engineers.

The meeting is free and open to the public. The cost for a buffet style lunch is $15 per person for IEEE members or $17 for nonmembers. Please RSVP by Tuesday, February 20th to Harry Turtschanow, 729-4057 or e-mail hturtsch "ąt" anthc.org.

[6]  Golf Tournament

Greetings members,

I am looking for feedback for an idea of having our own golf tournament to start a new IEEE scholarship within the University of Alaska system. I am sure some of you have participated in one of the tournaments that the local vendors put on and I would follow that same type of best ball play format. If you are interested in helping to put together an event such as this for some time this summer please contact me. Remember that the section is here to benefit you the members; if you have any ideas of events or other issues that you feel would give added benefit to your membership feel free to contact me on those issues as well.
